Ernie Ball Music Man is an American manufacturer that began in California in 1974 and has been owned by the string maker Ernie Ball since the mid-1980s. Instruments are built in San Luis Obispo, California, with a lower-priced import line sold as Sterling by Music Man. The company is best known for the StingRay bass, an early production instrument with an onboard active preamp, and for the Sterling and Bongo basses that followed. The electric guitar range includes the Axis, Cutlass and Albert Lee models and a long-running John Petrucci signature series. Music Man basses are a common sight in rock, funk and progressive music.
