1963 Les Paul SG Custom Reissue, VOS, Copper Iridescent
1963 SG Custom Reissue in Copper Iridescent This Gibson Custom Select 1963 Les Paul SG™ Custom Reissue is finished in Copper Iridescent, a color which debuted in 1955 at the NAMM show. Gibson Custom Select guitars are built in small batches by the skilled artisans at Gibson Custom. The features of these guitars are hand-selected by Gibson’s experts, who draw upon inspiration from vintage examples, alternative history, and player-centric upgrades. This 1963 Les Paul SG Custom Reissue has received a color change from the typical Classic White to Copper Iridescent, a finish previously offered only on the Gibson Custom 1955 NAMM Show Commemorative Edition Les Paul™. The Les Paul Custom from the 1950s shares many of the aesthetic upgrades with the SG Custom, such as an ebony fretboard with large block mother-of-pearl inlays, the iconic split diamond inlay on the headstock, and multi-ply binding around the headstock. This 1963 SG Custom Reissue features a three-pickup configuration, as well as a Maestro™ Vibrola™ tailpiece. Gold hardware is featured throughout the guitar on the pickup covers, Maestro Vibrola tailpiece, control knob inserts, and tuning machines. The hardware brings out the golden hue of the Copper Iridescent finish. The combination of the hardware and paint job has a similar aesthetic to a top-of-the-line Lincoln from the same era. The inspiration behind the design of this Gibson Custom Select 1963 Les Paul SG Custom Reissue is, in an alternative timeline, what if Copper Iridescent debuted just a few years later in 1963 instead of 1955? This color originates from the 1955 Lincoln catalog and was featured in a set of five colors that debuted in 1955 at the NAMM show on the Les Paul. A handful of original examples of these five special finishes exist in the wild, some of which have been surfaced by leading figures in the vintage guitar world. While the 1955 Les Paul featured an ABR-1 bridge with a Stop Bar tailpiece and a pair of Soapbar P-90 pickups, the 1963 Les Paul SG Custom Reissue features a trio of Custombucker pickups and an ABR-1 with nylon saddles and a Maestro Vibrola. This Gibson Custom Select 1963 Les Paul SG Custom Reissue features all the standard characteristics of an SG Custom that make the model so iconic, but with a special finish that is part of Gibson’s history and is rarely seen. Made in small batches with hand-selected features, Gibson Custom Select offers unique guitars with a story behind each one. Included with the guitar is a reissue hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
