Gibson Custom Select offers unique instruments that are made in small batches with special features such as upgraded tonewoods and special finishes. These guitars are designed by Gibson’s top experts who hand-pick all the features on the guitar. This instrument is based on a Les Paul Custom from the Modern Collection with some features that can only be found in Gibson Custom Select or Made to Measure. The Les Paul Custom from the Modern Collection is the modern interpretation of the Les Paul Custom that was released in 1957, otherwise known as the “Black Beauty.” Back in the early days, the Les Paul Custom was made from one of piece of solid mahogany, usually equipped with three humbuckers™, had multi-ply binding around the body, and an Ebony finish. Much of the Les Paul Custom has stayed true to the original design, but the Les Paul Custom has been modernized throughout the decades. Now crafted from a mahogany body with a maple top, the modern Les Paul Custom has player-friendly features like a Les Paul Custom Modern C-Shape neck profile and 490R and 498T pickups. The split-diamond inlay on the headstock and mother-of-pearl block inlaid throughout the ebony fretboard still give the modern Les Paul Custom its classic aesthetics. Multi-ply binding is still featured on the top and back of the body with a more binding around the headstock. The top has traditional f-holes, which are usually featured on the ES™ family of Gibson guitars. The chambered mahogany body removes mass from the body of the guitar, which lightens the weight compared to if it were completely solid.
