The Les Paul Custom has its roots in the mid-1950s when it was the top-of-the-line model in the Les Paul family. The Les Paul Custom features ornate appointments such as multi-ply binding on the top and back of the body of the guitar, the Les Paul Custom split diamond inlay on the peghead, and mother-of-pearl block inlays on the fretboard. The Les Paul Custom from the Modern Collection retains all these features from the original models, but the modern version has updates like the Modern Medium C-Shape neck profile and 9-hole weight relief on the mahogany body. Measuring .82 inches at the first fret and .965 inches at the 12th fret, the Modern Medium C-Shape neck profile is slightly fuller than what you find on a SlimTaper™ neck profile. While original Les Paul Customs from the 1950s had an all-mahogany body, the Modern Les Paul Custom features a maple top with a mahogany body, which is the same tonewood combination found on Les Paul Standards. Inspired by Gibson’s ties to the United Kingdom, the Earl Grey finish was born out of the Gibson Custom Shop. This intricate, multi-layered finish involves three stages of spraying different paints. The result is a unique, smoky-brown effect reminiscent of steeped Earl Grey tea. This complex finishing process highlights the exceptional craftsmanship of the Custom Shop. A coat of antique lacquer is applied to the entire guitar, lending a subtle yellow hue to the binding around the body, neck, and peghead. This modern Les Paul Custom is also given the Murphy Lab Light Aged treatment, which makes this brand-new guitar look like it could have been made decades ago. Nickel hardware is substituted for the normal gold hardware, which gives this guitar a slightly more subtle and earth-tone aesthetic.
