The Les Paul Custom was introduced in the 1950s as a deluxe version of the Les Paul Standard with visual upgrades . Nearly every aesthetic element was upgraded, including binding , hardware, and inlays. Multi-ply binding was added around the top and back of the body, where as the Les Paul Standard had binding only on the top. T he headstock also featured multi-ply binding, which the Les Paul Standard omitted . The headstock also received the iconic split-diamond mother-of-pearl inlay , a defining aesthetic feature of the Les Paul Custom . An ebony fretboard with block inlays replaced the rosewood fret board with trapezoid inlays , and nickel hardware was swapped for gold to complete the elevated look.
