This Gibson Custom Select SJ-200 features a Merlot Burst, which is the first of its kind from Gibson Custom. This finish is reminiscent of a fine wine that changes hue depending on the kind of glass it is in. From a deep burgundy color to a brighter hue in the center, this finish is featured on the top, the back, and the neck. The specially constructed three-piece back with a AAA flame maple center strip features the Merlot Burst finish while being surrounded by naturally finished rosewood. The two-piece flame maple neck features the matching Merlot Burst with a unique burst pattern that is the first of its kind from Gibson. This three-piece back is not found on any normal production model and uses the same construction techniques that are found on the Gibson Custom Monarch. Abalone shell is featured prominently throughout the guitar, which contrasts with the burgundy-hued finish. This shell is inlaid on the purfling around the top, on the four-bar Moustache™ bridge, on the rosette around the soundhole, on the pickguard, and in the crown inlays. On the single ply bound peghead, the iconic Gibson script logo and crown inlay are inlaid with mother-of-pearl, while Gold Grover ® Imperial™ tuning machines top off the elegant aesthetic of the instrument.
