1963 SG Special Reissue, Light Aged, TV Pelham Blue Sparkle
1963 SG Special Reissue in TV Pelham Blue Sparkle This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG™ Special Reissue features a brand-new finish that is inspired by some of Gibson’s most iconic finishes. Gibson Custom Select offers unique features on existing models, which are customized by some of Gibson’s own experts. These guitars are prime examples of what is possible through Gibson Custom Select and Made to Measure. These customizations can be anything from unique finishes to custom electronics to special hardware. This SG Special is finished in a brand-new finish from Gibson Custom, which is TV Pelham Blue Sparkle. The SG Special first appeared in the Gibson catalog in 1961 with the introduction of the SG body shape that replaced the Les Paul™. The Les Paul Special was swapped for the SG Special, which retained the same dual Soapbar P-90 pickup configuration and wraparound bridge. This bare-bones approach was designed for intermediate players as it had all the functionality of the SG Standard, with the biggest difference being equipped with P-90 pickups instead of humbucker™ pickups. Over the years, professional-level guitarists adopted the instrument due to its simplicity and unique voice, which P-90 pickups and a slab mahogany body evoke. A bound rosewood fretboard with dot inlays and an inlaid block Gibson headstock logo are the two other distinctions that separate the SG Special from the SG Junior. White button tuners maintain the understated look of the guitar while giving solid tuning stability. TV Pelham Blue Sparkle came from mixing two of Gibson’s most iconic finishes into one. TV Yellow was used on Les Paul Junior and Les Paul Special models during the 1950s, as well as a few SG Juniors in the early 1960s. This finish was only available on all-mahogany guitars due to the process of creating the finish. Wood filler is first applied to the guitar, and then a coat of color is applied over the top. This process makes the grain filler appear through the transparent finish. Pelham Blue was first an automotive color from the late 1950s, but as the rise of guitars and unique colors on cars started to surface in the market and popular culture, these finishes were also used on guitars. Pelham Blue was a custom-order finish that appeared on SG Standard guitars, Trini Lopez signature models, and more. The mixture of this historic Gibson custom color and another one of Gibson’s most iconic colors makes for a unique take on two classics. This Gibson Custom Select 1963 SG Special Reissue is the first of its kind with the TV Pelham Blue Sparkle finish. Mixing two parts of Gibson’s history into one finish is a unique story. Included with the guitar is a hardshell case and a Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
