Celebrating five amazing years of the Gibson Mod™ Collection, this Epiphone USA model takes the classic stripped-down double-cutaway chassis of the Coronet and soups it up with a Bigsby® vibrato, Thunderbird bridge pickup and Firebird neck humbucker™. Yes, you read that correctly. And, like the other members of the High Five crew—a Gibson Les Paul™ Junior Double Cut, a Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s, a Gibson Custom Explorer™ Custom, and a Firebird™ Platypus 10-String—the Coronet comes finished in an exclusive new color-shifting heavy flake sparkle guaranteed to turn heads. The Mod Collection team gave us the following rationale for this eye-catching creation: “The Epiphone USA Coronet came about almost by accident. We just happened upon it in a rack of guitars and noticed it had not been routed for pickups. It was set aside because the neck angle was too high for a stock model. We knew we could make something fun, cool, and exciting out of a 24-fret Coronet by adding an ABR-1 bridge and a Bigsby. Additionally, we wanted to push the envelope by giving it a unique pickup combination. Hence, the Firebird humbucker and Thunderbird bass pickup combo.” Shouldn’t a two-pickup Coronet with an ABR-1 bridge technically be an Epiphone Wilshire? Well, not quite. No matter how extreme the modifications are, or how far an instrument deviates from its original specifications, Mod Collection naming convention dictates that the original model name still applies. So this is still a Coronet—just a one-of-one example like no other that has come before. Where classic Coronets offer the simplicity and raw power of a great double-cut Les Paul Junior, this guitar is something else entirely. In combination with the Bigsby tailpiece, the pickups deliver depth, attack, and complexity in abundance—ideal for the ambient soundscapers among you or players heading out on a future-surf safari. Just add throbbing tremolo and reverb for days. In addition, with two full octaves on deck thanks to this Coronet’s extended 24-fret configuration, there’s an enormous amount of range and sonic potential here. Excited? We certainly are. All Gibson instruments go through rigorous QC, but every once in a while, a guitar with outstanding playability and tone doesn’t quite meet the strict cosmetic standards at our craftories.
